WHY LIVELY
Why Transfer Your HSA to Lively
Moving your HSA to Lively doesn't mean starting over. You've probably held off because switching sounds complicated, or because you're worried about what happens to money you've already invested. Neither is true here.
Your balance, your investments, and the progress you've already made all come with you. Switching providers isn't the same as starting over.

Zero Transfer Fees
Moving your balance to Lively costs nothing, no matter how much you're bringing over or how many accounts you're consolidating. There's no minimum balance required and no cap on what you can transfer in.

Investments Intact
Your full balance moves with you. Standard transfers arrive as cash, ready to reinvest. Moving from a Schwab HSBA? Your investments can transfer in-kind.

Support That Stays
A self-service dashboard and app handle the everyday stuff, and a real support team is there when something needs a person. Managing your HSA after you transfer doesn't mean relearning everything from scratch.
GETTING STARTED
How to Transfer Your HSA to Lively
Most of the transfer happens without you. You start it, Lively takes it from there.
Open your Lively HSA
Set up your account before starting the transfer. Keep your new account details on hand, you'll need them in the next step.
Start the transfer
Log in to your Lively account and find the transfer section. Complete the online transfer request there.
Add your old account
Enter your current HSA custodian's name, your account number, and the amount you want to move. Transfer your full balance to close the old account, or move a partial amount.
Authorize the move
Sign the transfer authorization digitally. Lively sends it directly to your old provider, you never receive a check yourself.
Wait for the funds
Your former provider processes the request, sells any non-cash investments, and sends the cash balance to Lively. Most transfers take 2 to 6 weeks, depending on your old provider's processing time.
Confirm your deposit
Once your funds arrive, check the balance against your last statement. Review your old provider's final statement for any closure or transfer fees they may have deducted.
TRANSFER VS. ROLLOVER
Transfer vs. Rollover: Which Applies to You
A direct transfer moves your HSA provider-to-provider with no limit on how often you can do it, and it stays exempt from taxes and penalties since you never receive the funds directly.
A rollover sends the money to you first. You then have 60 days to redeposit it into your new HSA, or it becomes taxable income plus a 20% penalty. IRS rules also cap rollovers at once every 12 months.
Most HSA holders choose a direct transfer for exactly this reason: no deadline, no funds passing through your hands, and no risk of a missed window turning into a tax bill.
INVESTMENT TRANSFERS
Can I transfer my HSA investments?
Your full balance transfers, but for standard transfers your holdings are sold first. Your old provider sells your investments before your transfer completes. The cash value, not the shares, arrives in your Lively account, leaving your funds out of the market during the 2 to 6 week transfer process before you can reinvest. Once your funds arrive, you can invest through your Lively account right away.
Moving from a Schwab HSBA? Lively supports in-kind transfers for eligible Schwab accounts, so your investments transfer directly without liquidating.
AFTER YOU TRANSFER
Your HSA debit card
A personalized Visa debit card is included with your Lively HSA, with up to three cards issued at no charge. Use it anywhere Visa is accepted for qualified medical expenses.
Your card is active as soon as your transfer completes, so there's no gap where you have HSA funds but no way to spend them.
Your HSA is ready when you are.

Frequently Asked Questions
HSA transfer FAQs
Are there any fees to transfer my HSA to Lively?
No. Lively won't charge you any fees to transfer or roll over your HSA. Note that your outgoing provider may charge its own account-closure or transfer fee, so check your final statement.
How do I transfer my HSA to Lively?
Open your Lively HSA, start the transfer request in your dashboard, and provide your current account details. Lively sends the authorization to your old provider, and your funds move directly. See the step-by-step above.
Will I owe taxes or a penalty to transfer my HSA?
No. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer is not taxed and has no penalty, because you never take possession of the funds. Taxes and a penalty only apply to a rollover if you miss the 60-day redeposit deadline, and that 20% additional tax applies only if you're under 65.
What's the difference between an HSA transfer and a rollover?
A transfer moves money directly between providers with no limit and no deadline. A rollover sends the money to you first, must be redeposited within 60 days, and is limited to once every 12 months.
