Weight Loss Programs
Weight loss programs may be eligible for reimbursement with flexible spending accounts (FSA), health savings accounts (HSA), and health reimbursement accounts (HRA) with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). A licensed healthcare provider determines medical necessity. They are not eligible for reimbursement with dependent care flexible spending accounts (DCFSA) and limited-purpose flexible spending accounts (LPFSA). Weight loss programs will only qualify if the program treats a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease). If you’re thinking about trying a weight loss program, speak with a healthcare provider to help you decide on the type of program that’s best for you. The IRS rules surrounding LMNs are complex and limited to individual facts and circumstances. Please be sure to discuss all LMN expenses with your plan administrator first.
